How to change a Light Switch
How to change a light switch. Step 1. Turn OFF the power. You may have to get a friend to hold a flashlight for you while changing the switch. Step 2. Remove the switch plate. If it is only a single switch this will consist of only two screws. Step 3. Remove the switch from the box. DO NOT REMOVE WIRES FROM SWITCH YET. Step 4. Examine the switch and determine that the new switch is the same as the old switch. Are the screws holding the wires the same? Are there the same number of wires ect.ect. Step 5. Remove ONE wire from old switch and put in on new switch in the same position as the old switch. Step 6. Repeat step five until all wires are moved from old switch to new switch. Step 7. Reinstall switch in wall. Step 8. Reinstall switch cover. Step 9. Turn power back on. Caution DO NOT ATTEMPT IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE with working with wires. If there is any question you should call a licensed Electrician.

I remember one wiring job I did about 30 years ago. I had a 1959 Studebaker and I broke off the key in the ignition. Replacing the ignition cost more than the car was worth. I figured out which wires did what and attached a house light switch to the one set wires and a push button door bell button switch to the wires that turned over the starter. I would flip on the house light switch and then push the door bell button. As soon as the car started I released the door bell button. I ran the car for years like that. When I traded it in the salesman had a good laugh.
